The HSRI Executive Committee has proposed an update to the articles relating to HSRI Membership in the Bylaws. In summary, the revised Article II would provide for three separate membership levels:
-
Full Membership – for ladder-rank UC Merced faculty, and UC Merced researchers with PI status
-
Affiliate Membership – for applicants that do not meet the requirements for full membership; and
-
Student Membership – for graduate students engaged in health sciences research.
This revision would mean:
-
postdocs, lecturers, medical professionals, community members could apply for Affiliate Membership, but they would not be eligible for Full Membership.
-
Only Full Members will be eligible to vote on future changes to bylaws, or other referenda put to the membership (to date, this is the first all-member vote of any kind)
A two thirds majority is required of those who cast their vote in order to make this change to the bylaws. Your vote is important!
Please read carefully the PROPOSED text below, which is followed by the ORIGINAL text for comparison. You will then see radio buttons, where you will be asked to vote YES or NO.
A vote YES approves the proposed change to the bylaws
A vote NO rejects the change to the bylaws, keeping the original text.
PROPOSED TEXT:
Article II: Membership
2.1 HSRI seeks to be inclusive with regards to faculty on campus, but with the focus on supporting research in the human health sciences.
2.2 Full Membership shall be open to UC Merced ladder-rank faculty and other UC Merced researchers with Principal Investigator status, who are actively involved in scientific inquiry and scholarship consistent with the objectives of HSRI as defined in Article I. Voting privileges on HSRI policy and by-law matters are restricted to HSRI Full Members.
2.3 Affiliate Membership is open to individuals who do not meet the criteria for Full Membership, but are engaged in scholarship consistent with the objectives of HSRI as outlined in Article I.
2.4 Student Membership is open to UC Merced registered graduate students who are actively involved in scientific inquiry and scholarship consistent with the objectives of HSRI as defined in Article I.
2.5 Individuals wishing to be Full, Affiliate, or Student Members of HSRI must submit a written application to the HSRI Director indicating their interest and briefly outlining how they will contribute to HSRI’s mission as defined in Article I. This should be accompanied by a current curriculum vita. New applicant materials will be evaluated by the Executive Committee twice per year (in April for applications submitted before March 31, and in October for applications submitted before September 30 each year), and the individual admitted to HSRI membership if their application receives a simple majority vote of the Executive Committee.
2.6 Members are expected to participate actively in HSRI’s mission and objectives.
2.7 Membership renewal will be on a yearly basis beginning in September following the first full year of membership.
2.8 Members are required to provide a summary of their participation in HSRI’s mission and objectives during the prior year (including but not limited to publications, honors and awards, press and publicity) and an updated curriculum vitae at the time of membership renewal.
2.9 Membership renewal and the appeal process should renewal be denied will be determined based upon criteria determined by the Executive Committee, which the Executive Committee may, at its discretion, delegate to a Membership Committee (see article 5.1).
